Why Is My Dishwasher Making A Grinding Noise?

1. Clogged Spray Arms
Dishwasher spray arms play a key role in cleaning, but they can sometimes become clogged with leftover food particles or mineral buildup from hard water.
How to Fix It
Remove obstructions from the spray arms by poking out debris with a toothpick or thin wire. To reduce mineral deposits, try a vinegar cycle or install a water filter.
2. Blocked Pump
Sometimes leftover food scraps or tiny utensils can become stuck in the pump or chopping mechanism, causing a disturbing grinding sound.
How to Fix It
Check the bottom of the dishwasher for any foreign objects and carefully remove anything that doesn’t belong.
3. Plugged Inlet Valve
A blocked water inlet valve can create grinding sounds in a dishwasher. This problem often occurs in areas with hard water, where mineral buildup slows water flow and impacts operation.
How to Fix It
To fix a blocked inlet valve, disconnect the hose, clean out any sediment filter, and remove any trapped debris or mineral buildup.
4. Blocked Chopper Blade
The chopper blade, found at the base of the dishwasher, grinds up food scraps to keep the drain flowing. Appliance SD Repair. If blocked by debris, utensils, or broken fragments, it can fail to rotate smoothly and produce a grinding sound.
How to Fix It
Remove any debris from the chopper blade to see if that fixes the issue before deciding to replace it.
5. Faulty Motor Bearings
If water reaches the motor bearing, it can cause rust and produce a grinding sound. Some dishwashers, however, have sealed bearings that don’t need lubrication, which helps prevent water-related damage.
How to Fix It
Prevent rust on motor bearings by following the manufacturer’s lubrication instructions. If corrosion is extensive, the bearings might need to be replaced.
6. Worn-Out Pump Assembly
Dishwashers have both a drain pump and a circulation pump. Damage or blockages in either one can cause a noticeable grinding noise.
How to Fix It
Check the pump for any trapped debris and clear it to determine if that fixes the problem. If the pump shows damage, it will need to be replaced.
7. Loose Dishes
Improperly positioned dishes may move around during washing, causing a loud grinding noise. Fortunately, this is an easy problem to fix.
How to Fix It
To fix this, arrange dishes properly according to the manual and ensure no items are loose on the bottom rack.
When to Call a Pro
If the grinding sound continues despite attempting these fixes, it may be necessary to contact a professional Appliance SD Repair technician to inspect or service your dishwasher.
